R&D Project to Commercialize Hydrogen Train until 2028
new post
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) of South Korea announced the official launch of an R&D project aimed at commercializing hydrogen electric trains by 2028. The project will install hydrogen-related infrastructure on existing rail lines and conduct test operations of distributed hydrogen-powered electric train, which is mainly taken for mid-distance commuting.
There will be a total of 32.1 billion KRW (approx. USD 23 million) invested into the pilot project by the year of 2027 led by the Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) with a goal of early commercialization of the environmentally friendly hydrogen train with key technologies developed through national R&D in 2022.
Hydrogen trains are upcoming eco-friendly vehicles that generate electricity via fuel cells using onboard hydrogen storage to get driving force from the electric-powered motors. Since this internal power supply system does not need external power lines connected, it can significantly enhance the railroad accessibility by bring it in non-electrified railroads as well.
